Earlier this week, a crossing guard from Palmcroft Elementary school was hit by a 60-year-old woman who was driving a Toyota Rav4. On September 6th, 2022 the crossing guard, 70-year-old Maria Cecilia Chavez, died in a Phoenix hospital from her injuries.
Yuma Police Department shared with YumaDailyNews.com that there were no updated charges on the driver who hit Chavez, also that this was not a hit-and-run case.
Residents in the area took to social media to express their condolences and memories of Chavez. Cassidy wrote on social media saying how she's going to miss seeing Chavez's face every day. Another user named Marie says "What a tragedy. My prayers are with her family."
Chavez was a crossing guard for Plamcroft Elementary, officials from the school say how the facility, staff, and students are so sad about the loss of Chavez. "Our thoughts go out to the family of Chavez, we will miss her, and are so sorry for your loss", says Plamcroft Elementary School officials.
