YUMA – City officials are encouraging residents to apply for the 2023 Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA), a once-a-week, in-depth course about different City functions, departments, services and facilities.
The City is now accepting applications, which are available along with additional details and the 2023 class schedule directly at www.yumaaz.gov/nla.
NLA brings together key City of Yuma staff members to inform participants about how City government works, including the distinct roles and responsibilities of City Council and City administration.
There is no fee to apply or attend. Applications remain open until the academy reaches its 25-person capacity. Prospective applicants are encouraged to apply early.
Academy participants will meet this year for three-hour sessions on Thursday evenings every week from Jan. 12, 2023 through April 6, 2023, culminating with a graduation event April 13, 2023.
NLA prepares participants to get involved in local government, from how to have their voices be heard to understanding which agency or department should be addressed to handle a specific issue.
Graduates from the Neighborhood Leadership Academy become prepared to serve if asked to work with City staff and Council on ad-hoc committees focusing on special issues and topics, and on community events.
Past graduates have reported that they leave better informed and prepared to participate in community boards and commissions, as well as neighborhood associations.
NLA also prepares individuals to serve in elected City offices. Councilmember-elect Art Morales, for one example, is an NLA graduate.
